Kick Start Scheme

The objective

The government has introduced a new Kickstart Scheme to fund the direct creation of high-quality jobs for young people at the highest risk of long- term unemployment. It will give young people the chance to build their confidence and skills in the workplace, and to gain experience that will improve their chances of going on to find long-term, sustainable work.

How it works

The government has launched the new Kickstart Scheme in Great Britain, a £2 billion fund to create hundreds of thousands of high quality 6-month work placements aimed at those aged 16-24 who are on Universal Credit and are deemed to be at risk of long-term unemployment.
Funding available for each job will cover 100% of the relevant National Minimum Wage for 25 hours a week, plus the associated employer National Insurance contributions and employer minimum automatic enrolment contributions.

The benefits

For each ‘Kickstarter’ job, the government will:
Cover the cost of 25 hours’ work a week at the National Minimum Wage
£4.55 for under 18s
£6.45 for 18 to 20-year-olds
£8.20 for 21 to 24-year-olds
Employers will also be able to top up that payment if they wish

How Pathways LDN can support employers with the Kickstart Scheme

  • Acting as a specialist skills provider
  • Support with creating an evidence based CPD
  • Helping employers to understand & access funding
  • Preparing candidates for job applications & interviews
  • Providing a dedicated 1:1 learning mentor for Kickstart employees

This scheme will sit alongside a guaranteed foundation of support through an expanded Youth Offer delivered through the Department for Work & Pensions (DWP), providing a range of targeted support to help young people find lasting work.

Youth Hub

Pathways is so proud to be nominated as a Youth Hub in West London, we will be working in Partnership with DWP to promote the HUB in Hillingdon. Young people across all corners of Great Britain are now benefitting from new specialist employment support and advice from local Youth Hubs.

From these new Hubs, DWP Work Coaches are helping young jobseekers access local training and job opportunities, as well as a range of services to address wellbeing needs.

Over 110 Youth Hubs are currently providing this crucial support virtually, and as the country progresses carefully along the roadmap to recovery, virtual hubs are now opening in physical locations – helping reach even more young jobseekers in the communities where they live.

The Department will have at least one Youth Hub in every Jobcentre Plus district in the country.

Youth Hubs share spaces with partners including colleges, charities, training providers and local councils, meaning people are able to access a range of services in one location.

Youth Hubs – in concert with the department’s new jobcentre-based Youth Employability Coaches and the 13-week Youth Employment Programme (YEP) – are helping ensure quality, joined up support is accessible to those that need it.

Youth Hubs, Youth Employability Coaches, and the Youth Employment Programme form part of the government’s multi-billion-pound Plan for Jobs aimed at protecting, supporting and creating jobs for people of all ages across the country.
